Beth J. Fogel - B.A. MSW, CSW – Primary TherapistBeth has been actively working with emerging young adults in wilderness for the past 6 years. Clinically, Beth utilizes the Strengths Perspective, Empowerment Model of Social Work Practice, DBT, CBT, and Client Centered Therapy. She “meets” each client where he/she is. Her therapeutic approach focuses upon Family Systems. She is an advocate and understands that parents need much support, guidance, and education while their loved one is in wilderness. Beth specializes in working with young adult males who present with LD, NLD, RAD, Social Awkwardness and Isolation, Sexual Identity Issues, Anger, Grief and Loss, Anxiety and Mood, Internet Addiction, and those who are abusing substances as a way to self-medicate for underlying clinical issues.
Beth is a licensed social worker in Utah and has worked in her field since 1994. Beth has experience as a therapist working with adolescents and young adults in inpatient hospital, residential and wilderness settings. Beth received her B.A. in Studio Art from Cedar Crest College in Allentown, PA. She has shown her work internationally. After pursuing a career in advertising and marketing, Beth returned to graduate school and received her Masters in Social Work with a clinical concentration from Marywood University in Scranton, PA. She has also completed post-masters coursework in Ethics.
John worked 18 years in the juvenile prison system providing assessment and counseling services to adolescents and their families. He also worked for one year in a psychiatric hospital and most recently worked as a primary therapist for some reputable wilderness programs from 2007 to 2009.
John Cohen obtained a BA in Psychology from Ohio State University and an MS in Clinical Counseling from the University of Dayton. John has been a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) since 1997.
John has worked with the full range of behavioral and emotional challenges youth struggle with, including mood disorders, grief, attachment, trauma, substance abuse, and attentional/impulsive and learning disorders. He has assisted countless young people in developing stress management strategies and improving social and life skills. John has worked extensively with families in helping to improve family communication and relations. He has also supervised many clinicians working towards licensure, as well as provided training to mental health workers. Professionals who work with John note his commitment and dedication to his clients and their families.
John was drawn to the wilderness setting after having many of his own incredible experiences in the wilderness. He realized how much it impacted his life and wanted to use it with what he enjoys the most, working with kids and young adults. John was adopted and enjoys any opportunity to work with adopted young people. John is committed to helping kids and families heal their relationships and improve communication. John believes in treating the "core" issue instead of only focusing on behaviors and believes in establishing strong relationships with his students and families as an effective means of facilitating the therapeutic process.
In his spare time he loves to mountain bike, hike, snowboard, cross-country ski, skate ski, back country snowboard, and play guitar. He is a musician on the side and has been in many bands over the years. He has guided biking trips and has been running a Mountain Bike club since 1998.
Tracy Schrunk - LCSW - Primary Therapist
Tracy has been working with adolescents and emerging young adults for the past 11 years as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. She started assisting young people to recover from trauma and find their purpose in college as a rape crisis counselor and moved into working with adolescents in residential treatment before obtaining her Master's Degree in Social work from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, TX. Her gifts lie in her ability to see past the walls and assist youth to re-awaken to their purpose and begin to live an authentic life. In doing so, she assists them in their journey by teaching them to take ownership of their lives and seek out their vision.
Tracy brings a wide range of skills to Wingate as she has been a therapist, clinical director, and executive director over the past 11 years. She utilizes a no-nonsense, non-pathological approach in meeting youth and young adults where they are currently at in the process of their lives. She also utilizes CBT approaches, DBT, strengths perspective, family systems, metaphors, experiential activities, and other approaches as needed by the individual and family she is working with. Tracy is known for her out of the box thinking, sense of humor, compassion, and the relentless pursuit in assisting others to seek out the truth about themselves and the world around them. While Tracy has a passion for working with girls and young women, she has been able to work with both genders with the following struggles: personality issues, addiction, trauma, learning issues, identity issues, adoption, grief/loss, self-esteem, depression, bipolar, anxiety, sexual identity crisis, and relational struggles.
Tracy received her BA in psychology with honors from the University of Iowa where she also competed for the volleyball team.
