  • As a wilderness therapy program for at-risk youth ages 13-17, WinGate Wilderness Therapy utilizes a strengths-based approach to recognize potential in even the most challenging of students. Proper, thorough assessment coupled with proven treatment strategies implemented in a supportive environment, create the WinGate difference. It begins with the deep-rooted belief that every student is unique, gifted, and capable of dramatic emotional and behavioral transformation. As a result, a nurturing yet challenging environment is provided so that students can grow, gain perspective, and attain a new level of maturity, while addressing their specific behavioral issues and problems. The best practices of the wilderness are combined with the best clinical techniques in order to take wilderness therapy to a dramatically higher level of integration and results.

At WinGate, we are always interested in people who have what it takes to join the WinGate team. The two most sought after positions include our field staff and therapists.

Wind Walkers, the WinGate field staff
Wilderness field staff, commonly known as Wind Walkers here at Wingate. Trained Wind Walkers use the wilderness and primitive living skills as metaphors to help create an environment that invites change out of each student, as opposed to telling him or her what to do. Wind Walkers are expected to improve their own lives just as the students do. They should be growing and preparing their own hearts as they support the students on their path.

It is imperative that a Wind Walker truly walks with the students. You'll hike when they hike, you'll participate in whatever they are asked to participate in, you'll eat what they eat, and your gear, in most cases, will be even more primitive than students’ gear.

  • The program's objective is to inspire students and to invite them to awaken; resulting in better decision making and healthier relationships. Throughout our students’ stay at WinGate, we focus on preparing their hearts, honoring their strengths to engage change, and their relationships with others.

  • Preference will be given to those applicants who have wilderness first responder certification and can commit to one year. Wind Walkers will work 8 days on and 6 days off during a 14-day rotation (Tuesday to Tuesday; working all day every Tuesday).

  • Pay is extremely competitive for this industry. Compensation starts at $105/day, with the opportunity to make up to $195/day. After completing 24 days on the trail, a Wind Walker is eligible for a training stipend. Health and dental benefits are also provided after 90 days.

If you believe that you will be an asset to WinGate, email or fax your resume and cover letter. Once all of your preliminary paperwork has been received, a telephone interview will be set up.
