Personal commitments are often associated with simple wants or desires; however, true personal commitment holds deeper value because it does not accept complete failure as an option. It is true that casual desires or goals have the potential to motivate action, but such action is conditional. That is, a person will only seek to achieve a superficial desire when the circumstance surrounding it is ideal or easy. On the contrary, individuals who make and are devoted to personal commitments will work and aspire to achieve them despite whatever external challenges or unforeseen obstacles they encounter. Complete failure is not an option.

The Need for Perseverance

With such strict conditions, personal commitments may then on the surface appear impossible. After all, failure is always a potential option, isn’t it? Yes of course. Failure is always a potential outcome, but it is not failure that personal commitments refuse, but complete failure – failure that is permanent due to a resultant lack of trying, motivation, and confidence in the aspirer. Individuals who keep their personal commitments understand that along the way, they may fail, but they also know that such losses can only be learned from, and strengthen their resolve to try again and work even harder.

The Value of Personal Commitments
