Wilderness Therapy as an Aftercare Program

Not every young adult that participates in the wilderness therapy program offered by WinGate will be undergoing initial treatment; some will be taking advantage of the recovery elements associated with the program. Wilderness therapy can be a great facilitator of aftercare needs.

Aftercare programs help young adults manage their recovery process by introducing life skills that will help them engage the many challenges they will encounter along the way. The development of coping skills is essential to achieving success in recovery.

The ability to engage personal and social responsibility is paramount to developing the ability to effectively navigate the complicated streets of life. The comprehensive and individualized programs offered at WinGate Wilderness Therapy have an element that is focused on addressing the importance of personal and social responsibility — equipping troubled young adults to thrive in their environment.

Life Skills for Young Adults

When it comes to treating troubled young adults, the development of life skills is an essential component in the process of facilitating recovery and enhancing the chance of long-term success in life. At WinGate Wilderness Therapy, we are committed to offering treatment programs that are based on the process of development and progressive improvement. Troubled young adults face a number of different challenges, including behavioral issues, substance abuse, and addiction, and the development of life skills will be paramount in preparing these individuals to confront the many challenges they will face in life on a consistent basis.

Help for Troubled Young Adults

Treating a person who is struggling with addiction, substance abuse or any number of behavioral issues requires that the individual be equipped with certain tools that will allow them to effectively engage the natural challenges associated with life. According to Addictions and Recovery.org, the most useful tool to ensure recovery is the development of certain life skills. The development of these skills will help struggling young adults avoid finding themselves in high-risk situations that have the potential to increase the chance of entering some stage of relapse.

Developing the right life skills will also assist troubled young adults in managing their anxiety and stress levels, which play a significant role as triggers for erroneous behavior that can lead to relapse. When a young adult has a set of skills that allow them to rationally engage potentially hostile situations in a manner that helps to de-escalate the situation, they are less likely to find themselves in a position in which they will perpetuate poor decisions and bad behavior.

Wilderness Programs for Young Adults

While many television shows reveal the devastating force of nature, indicating the fallout of natural disasters such as tornados, forest fires, and massive flooding, nature also has a peaceful and tranquil demeanor. At WinGate Wilderness Therapy, we focus on using the tranquility and beauty of nature to facilitate positive adjustments and the treatment of struggling young adults who are dealing with a number of complicated issues that include behavioral challenges, substance abuse, and addiction.

The use of nature as a secure and serene environment through which young adults can confront their problematic issues is becoming more popular as more information is presented on its effectiveness.

Young Adult Wilderness Camps

While Wilderness Therapy may be a new concept to many people, it has been a significant influence on the development of treatment modalities for decades. The concept was introduced in the U.S. during the 1950s, and its popularity has grown with each passing decade.

According to a detailed report published by the USDA Forest Service, wilderness therapy has become popular among clinicians and therapists due to the fact that the concept is highly effective as an initial treatment modality or as an aftercare mechanism.

The aftercare component of wilderness therapy allows for the introduction of life skills that will be instrumental to the process of ensuring the long-term success of troubled young adults. The introduction of certain life skills during wilderness therapy provides the individual with specific mechanisms that they will be able to use to help them effectively engage the considerable challenges that are a natural part of life, but serve as triggers for negative behavior.

Our WinGate Wilderness Therapy consultants are available to assist the parents of young adults in determining the type of treatment that will be best for their unique situation. Call (800) 560-1599 today.

Philosophy

The WinGate Philosophy of the Successful Treatment of Young Adults

At WinGate, our philosophy is that every young adult is capable of dramatic internal change. When clinical issues are effectively addressed, real change occurs. Part of the real change is also a returning to, or a re-discovering of oneself, revealing a unique, talented and gifted person.

Helping young men and women create an awakening of the heart by healing the pain of the past, understand the value of today and gain the strength to move forward into the future...

WinGate blends ancient cultural systems, advanced clinical techniques, and the healing elements of the earth to reunite the hearts of young people and their families.

Through the Intermediate Health Care program, the WinGate approach is non-confrontational. Rather than seek to modify a person’s behavior, we seek to assist in gaining insight into how these behaviors manifested and how we can aid in developing skills for new, more effective choices and behaviors. Additionally, we utilize a strengths-based model that seeks to recognize clients for their growth and for the person they are underneath the behavior. The goal of WinGate is to walk alongside a young person as they venture into change.

Our decades of experience in wilderness settings, commitment to hiring seasoned and professional staff, genuine concern for each of our students, and exacting safety standards create the ideal environment to help struggling young adults look inside themselves and discover who they truly are.

Our clinical team seeks to understand the underlying issues that have led up to the young person requiring our care and guidance. By understanding the whole person, rather than just a behavior, we can develop thorough and individualized treatment plans for the young person and work with the family to develop new and more effective strategies for the future.

Why Wilderness

Why Wilderness Therapy for Young Adults?

At WinGate, we believe that wilderness therapy is an effective form of treatment for young adults because it combines established therapeutic practices with a wilderness environment that is itself healing.

In fact, there are certain aspects of wilderness that act as treatment effect multipliers. Treatment effect multipliers are certain factors, identified from psychology and counseling research, that magnify the effectiveness of conventional therapy of young adults.

This means that treatment conducted in a wilderness setting can be more powerful than treatment in indoor settings. Several research studies have shown the benefit of wilderness therapy for a variety of issues, including substance abuse/addictions, depression, anxiety, ADD, ADHD, personality disorders, and motivation issues.

Wilderness therapy often works for clients who haven’t had success with other treatments, works for issues that traditional therapies don’t typically help, and creates change more rapidly than conventional treatment.

It helps the most resistant young adults become open to treatment, helps those struggling with denial about their substance use become aware of their addiction and willing to change, and helps those struggling with depression and anxiety to find lasting contentment and serenity.

Wilderness Therapy Works

So how does wilderness work? There are a thousand plausible reasons why therapy in nature works. It is impossible to capture on paper the experience of being out in the desert, lying in a warm sleeping bag while staring at the starry sky after a long and satisfying hike, listening to the wind through the juniper trees.

We can’t bottle or capture the different thoughts and feelings of every young adult in the group while they watch the fading gold and pink glow of a sunset on the sandstone cliffs and canyons as they successfully finish making a bow-drill fire.

There will always be a portion of wilderness that has to be experienced and can never be fully explained, some series of moments, thoughts, and interactions that give each and every young adult exactly what they need in their life on that day.

Of course, wilderness therapy is more than just the wilderness experience. True wilderness therapy programs utilize the most widely accepted therapy practices. Credentialed therapists meet with the young adult weekly and make a treatment plan. They structure a series of interventions based on empirically supported techniques to intentionally create positive change...

Many young adults and their families choose wilderness therapy because they believe it will work better than traditional therapy. Therapy in the wilderness is more effective in a shorter period of time than therapy in an office or even in a residential treatment center. There are several factors that make this possible:

  • Fewer distractions and more ability to pay attention in the wilderness that allows for a greater focus on working on therapeutic issues.
  • Stronger therapeutic relationships as a result of the small-group shared wilderness experience
  • 24/7 treatment that gives more opportunity to change to occur
  • Gains in real-life self-efficacy that build the ability to practice new living skills
  • Decreased stress that reduces anxiety and substance cravings and, along with the remote setting, decreases the chance of treatment dropout.
  • A new way of living through the Arbinger principles and/or the Twelve Steps.
