Employment Opportunities

WinGate field guides (known as Wind Walkers) get the combined benefits of working in the outdoors, a deepened connection to the earth through ancestral skills, being a part of something bigger than themselves, tremendous personal growth, community with other remarkable and interesting people, and a schedule that leaves lots of time for adventure, travel or other pursuits!

As we engage with adolescents and young adults in crisis, instead of focusing on the problematic behavior, we strive to see and respond to the wound that the behavior is a symptom of. Our job is not to punish “bad kids”, or even to train them or gain their compliance. Instead, we invite healing by utilizing the medicine of the natural world, modeling growth, healthy connection and joy, as well as by loving them. While we do hold standards and create some structure, instead of contrived consequences and/or incentives, we have influence through example and relationship. When we remove the distraction of the power struggle, the students can find intrinsic motivation and clearly recognize natural consequences. They have the opportunity to choose, design and create their own transformation, or better said, a returning to themselves.

The wilderness and the primitive skills that we practice provide a powerful metaphor, as well as challenges that build confidence and capacity. As Wind Walkers, in partnership with mother nature and our dynamic clinical team, our objective is to invite each student to a heart at peace within them self and deeper, more meaningful relationships with others.

To be a Wind Walker is an honor and an adventure, likely the most fun and rewarding job you’ll have. But it will also likely be the most challenging; physically, emotionally and mentally. As we ask the students to find their edge and see it as a challenge, not a limit, we have ample opportunity to show them exactly how that’s done. As a Wind Walker, we walk with the students. We hike when they hike, we eat what they eat, and our gear, if anything, is more primitive than the students’ gear. They will know how to get the most from the experience by watching us engage, strive and expand our comfort zone. Their trajectory will parallel ours. As we are energetic and enthusiastic in growing and learning, they will be as well!
