The Wingate Difference | What Sets Us Apart

WinGate Difference Treatment Troubled Teens

Typical wilderness programs provide the therapeutic benefits of the wilderness, but have difficulty addressing the specific needs of each student. At WinGate Wilderness Therapy, we’ve developed and implemented five Distinct Elements—practices that set us apart from other wilderness programs.

Therapists and field staff at WinGate reach struggling teens with a no-resistance approach to wilderness therapy. WinGate prides itself on taking a warm, humanistic approach to wilderness therapy. We will challenge students in such non-traditional ways they don’t understand they’re being challenged. As teens actively work at building walls (resistance), our Non-traditional Wilderness Therapy allows our Therapist’s to circumvent those walls, gaining valuable clinical information while authentically expediting the personal growth process.

Distinct Elements: What Sets Us Apart

1. Wilderness-Integrated Assessment

2. Family Participation

3. Experience and Clinical Expertise

4. A New and Different Model

5. Preparation for the Next Step

1. Wilderness-Integrated Assessment

An accurate assessment is key to therapeutic success. Our assessment process begins with the first phone call, continuing throughout treatment and transition into placement beyond WinGate. We have developed a unique method to aid in the accurate assessment of adolescents and young adults in the wilderness setting. It utilizes daily observation and feedback from trained staff to expand the understanding of students and define their progress in twelve different life domains, including areas such as initiative, insight, leadership, identity, mood, sociability, and attitude. We also utilize past clinical records, clinical interviews, psychological testing, and ongoing observation. Individualized, short-term treatment plans as well as long-term solutions and placements can be implemented far more effectively using our unique assessment method.

2. Family Participation

Another key difference is our ability to involve the whole family in the therapeutic wilderness journey to create overall change at home and secure lasting success. Families operate as a system involving important structures such as roles, rules, boundaries and patterns. Every member of that system plays an integral role. A parent seminar is held during the first part of the child’s stay as an important first step. Throughout your child’s stay at WinGate, you will work with your primary therapist to complete therapeutic assignments and work through some of the difficult family issues. The therapist serves as the guide for you and your child, making recommendations as you embark on this journey in tandem. Near the end of your child’s stay, you’re invited to participate in a special wilderness graduation ceremony that honors the significant work you and your child have done.

3. Experience and Clinical Expertise

The wilderness experience is powerful. At WinGate, we harness that power and combine it with the right blend of clinical expertise and experiential intensity. When done properly, it creates an unparalleled environment for emotional and social growth. Our staff, with a combined total of more than 100 years’ experience in the field, brings a tremendous amount of clinical expertise to assist you and your family throughout the healing process. Therapists and field staff members have been carefully selected from among the finest in wilderness therapy. Their experience, training, and native skills help provide peace of mind as your child participates in our program.

4. A New and Different Model

We have drawn from our years of experience in wilderness therapy in order to create an innovative wilderness model. Unlike the others, our groundbreaking Strengths Based/Natural Consequence Model allows your child to participate in group therapy as well as specialized, issue-directed treatment groups. The WinGate Model utilizes the challenges of the wilderness to assist students in recognizing their talents and strengths while increasing their understanding of natural consequences. We also build relationships of trust in order to facilitate growth and self-discovery. Opportunities for internal change are supported, encouraged, and modeled. Students search deep within themselves to discover—or rediscover—their strengths, potential, and who they truly are.

5. Preparation for the Next Step

While participating in your family’s healing, we also help prepare you for life after WinGate and wilderness therapy. We utilize assessment and clinical tools to offer insights that can help you make informed decisions concerning your child’s next placement and/or continuing treatment with the home therapist. Through open communication with those involved in your child’s future care, WinGate becomes an active participant in the transition. We also help your child understand the structure, rules and group functions to facilitate the change and continue the momentum gained during the wilderness experience.
